The 351W gets stroked a half-inch by fitting the block with a 400M crankshaft (the 400M is a tall-deck Cleveland). Keep in mind the 351W has a 3.50-inch stroke while the 400M has 4 inches of ...351M crank pulley. I finally got it off!!! The damper is actually warped. That might be why I had to replace the mains. I was in the scrape yard looking for a damper and found a 400M from a 79 truck and bought it for $150. It actually runs. Thinking about rebuilding it and leaving the 351M in the truck alone.

Yes, you can use a 4.25" stroker crank for a 351W in a 400. However, you need a specific timing chain set that is made just for this swap. You CANNOT mix and match components to "make your own" set because the 351W crank sprocket has a different tooth count. I run a Windsor 4" forged crank in my 400 so it can be done.

The Ford 400 engine was based on the 351 Cleveland but was produced with a taller deck height of 10.297 inches compared to the 351C's 9.206 inches. This allowed for a longer stroke while retaining the 351C's rod-stroke ratio.
